Prof. A. A. Akamobi

Prof. A. A. Akamobi is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University. A seasoned academic and researcher, Prof. Akamobi brings a wealth of experience in the social sciences, with particular expertise in public policy, sociology, and human development.

Under his leadership, the Faculty of Social Science is committed to fostering critical thinking, interdisciplinary research, and community engagement. Prof. Akamobi is passionate about shaping socially responsible graduates who are equipped to address complex societal challenges through evidence-based solutions.

Faculty of Social Sciences: Exploring Human Behavior and Society

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University is dedicated to providing a first-rate platform for research, teaching, and learning in the humanities. We aim to produce graduates who are skilled, creative, and worthy in character, contributing significantly to societal development.

History

Date of Creation: 2001

Important Milestones:

  • 2001: Initially part of Faculty B (non-science courses).
  • 2004: Merged with Management Sciences to form the Faculty of Management Sciences.
  • 2006: Became the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
  • 2012: Split into the autonomous Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences.
  • Departments: Economics, Mass Communication, Political Science, and Public Administration were core departments from the beginning.
  • 2012: Sociology and Psychology departments were added.
  • 2016: Criminology and Security Studies department was added.
  • 2024: Library and Information Science department moved from the Faculty of Education.

Admission Requirements and Procedures

Undergraduate Admission:

  • Requirements as per university senate's approved entry requirements.
  • UTME: SSCE/GCE/NABTEB with credit passes in five subjects including English and Mathematics.
  • Direct Entry: GCE/HSC A-level passes, NCE credit/merit, ND lower credit, or a first university degree/HND.

Postgraduate Admission:

  • Graduate of COOU or recognized university.
  • Candidates without a first degree in the discipline admitted to PGD.
  • Master’s degree with CGPA 3.5 for Ph.D., or may register for M.Sc/Ph.D.
  • Master’s degree with CGPA below 3.5 required for M.Sc/Ph.D.

Admission Deferment, Transfer, and Registration Procedures

Admission Deferment:

  • For registered UTME/Direct Entry candidates within the first four weeks of the session.
  • Deferment allowed for financial/health reasons after paying prescribed fees.
  • Candidate must meet entry requirements.
  • Deferment is for one session only.

Registration Procedures:

  • Present certificates/results to Faculty Officer for clearance.
  • Obtain temporary clearance slip and registration number.
  • Pay fees at the bank and obtain receipt.
  • Present payment receipt, passport photos, UTME result, certificates/results, and other documents to Faculty Officer.

The faculty journal, established in 2011, is published annually and is available online at www.ansujass.com. Manuscripts can be submitted to ansujass@coou.edu.ng.
