Dr. Agary Nwokoye

(2024–Present)

Dr. Agary Nwokoye is the Head of the Department of Political Science. A distinguished political scientist and policy analyst, he has made significant contributions to the study of governance, democracy, and international relations in Nigeria and beyond.

Since assuming leadership in 2024, Dr. Nwokoye has focused on enhancing political education, fostering civic engagement, and encouraging critical inquiry into the workings of political systems. His vision includes strengthening academic-industry partnerships and preparing students for impactful careers in public service, diplomacy, and academia.

The Department of Political Science at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), established in 2000, is dedicated to cultivating competent and responsible graduates equipped to navigate the complexities of governance and contribute to national development. The department offers a comprehensive curriculum focusing on political theory, governance structures, and international relations.

  • First Class Honours Graduate: Mr. Ndubuisi Onwunyiri achieved the department's first First Class Honours in the 2015/2016 academic session.
  • Highest Number of Professors: The department boasts nine professors, the highest in the Faculty of Social Sciences at COOU.
  • Pioneering Ph.D. Graduate: Prof. Chike Osegbue became the department's first Ph.D. graduate.

Admission Requirements and Procedures

Undergraduate Admission
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 16 years at the time of admission.
  • University Matriculation Examination (UME): Acceptable UME score.
  • O’ Level Requirements: Credit passes in five SSCE subjects, including English, Mathematics, Government/History, Economics, and Christian Religious Knowledge (or relevant subjects), in no more than two sittings.
  • Direct Entry Requirements: Two A’ Level results in relevant subjects, or ND/HND with upper credit and five credit passes.
  • Duration of Study: Four years (UTME) or three years (Direct Entry).
Postgraduate Admission
  • General Requirements: Five credit passes at O’ Level, including English and Mathematics, and a valid NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.
  • Postgraduate Diploma (PGD): Third Class degree or HND with Distinction/Upper Credit.
  • Master of Science (M.Sc.): Second Class Lower Division or PGD with credit pass.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.): Master's degree with CGPA of at least 3.50.
