Dr. Mrs. C. I. Onyemaechi

(2024–Present)

Dr. Mrs. C. I. Onyemaechi is the Head of the Department of Psychology. A seasoned psychologist and academic, she specializes in mental health, counseling, and human behavior, and has dedicated her career to advancing psychological research and practice.

Since taking on the role in 2024, Dr. Onyemaechi has championed initiatives to modernize the curriculum, improve student support services, and foster partnerships with clinical and educational institutions to prepare students for impactful roles in the field of psychology.

Welcome to the Department of Psychology at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, where we are dedicated to exploring the depths of human behavior, thought, and emotion. Established in the 2011/2012 academic session, we have rapidly evolved into a hub of academic excellence, research innovation, and community impact.

History and Milestones

Establishment: 2011/2012 Academic Session

Key Milestones:

  • Initiation (2008): Advocacy for a dedicated Psychology department began by Mr. Okechukwu Dominic Nwankwo and Prof. C.C. Nweke.
  • Approval (2011): Officially approved under the leadership of Prof. Fidelis Okafor (Vice-Chancellor).
  • Early Leadership: Prof. Ntomchukwu Silvester Madu and Late Prof. Bernice Ezeilo played pivotal roles as early heads of the department.

Leadership

  • Prof. A. Agu (Dean): Provides strategic oversight and leadership in academic and administrative matters.
  • Dr. Mrs. C. I. Onyemaechi (HOD): Guiding the department with dedication, ensuring high academic standards, and fostering a vibrant research culture.

  • Academic Excellence: Produces graduates who excel academically and professionally.
  • Best Graduating Student: Owoh Ifeanyi Godswill, best graduating student in the Faculty of Social Sciences (2019/2020).

Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate: Five credits at O’level WAEC/GCE, including English, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science, and two other subjects.
  • Postgraduate (PGD, MSc, PhD): Specific academic criteria, including background in psychology or related disciplines from recognized institutions.

Future Targets

  • Infrastructure Development: Establish a standard classroom and Psychological Service Centre.
  • Research Expansion: Increase research output and collaborations.
  • International Collaboration: Strengthen partnerships for exchange programs, joint research, and conferences.
